What does a PR executive do?
Public relations work helps an organization communicate with the people and groups relevant to it. Depending on the employer, an entry-level PR or communications executive may research journalists or audiences, draft communication material, track coverage, coordinate events, support campaigns and report results. Agency and in-house work can differ substantially.
PR is not the same as journalism. Journalism serves a news audience through reporting and verification; PR represents an organization's communications interests. Ethical accuracy matters in both, but the role, obligations and decision-makers differ.
What should you be able to demonstrate?
| Capability | Why it matters | Honest portfolio sample |
|---|---|---|
| Audience understanding | Different readers need different information | One audience map for a hypothetical campus event |
| Clear writing | A release, pitch and social post serve distinct uses | Three short versions of the same verified announcement |
| Research and accuracy | Incorrect names or claims create reputational risk | A fact-check checklist with source links |
| Communication judgment | Not every message is appropriate for every channel | Explain channel and timing decisions |
| Measurement literacy | Outputs, reach and outcomes are not identical | A simple sample reporting template, with no invented results |
Portfolio example you can try this week
Create a fictional communications brief for a college's upcoming film screening. Specify the audience, objective, verified event facts, key message, one press announcement and one social post. Explain what you would measure. Do not present the project as commissioned work or invent audience reach.
If you have done real student club or internship communication work, you can include it with permissions and clear attribution for your own contribution.
How might employers evaluate you?
You may see writing tests, portfolio discussion, audience scenarios, recruiter conversations or manager interviews. Procedures vary. Practice answering: Who is the audience? What must be checked? How would you correct a mistake? How would you react if asked to make a claim you cannot substantiate?
What about language and geography?
Hindi, Bengali and other regional-language work can be valuable where the role serves those audiences. Match samples to the audience and language requested by actual employers. Check internships, contractual conditions and shifts before accepting an offer.
Ground your preparation in the actual purpose of PR
India's National Classification of Occupations describes PR work around information and communication for an organization, public understanding, media material and public opinion. That is a useful occupational reference, not a claim that every junior role includes every duty. A small agency role may emphasize media lists and monitoring; an in-house role may emphasize internal stakeholders. Read the vacancy before deciding which sample to lead with.
A portfolio brief a fresher can genuinely defend
Illustrative exercise: A college hosts a film screening. Create a one-page factual brief with date, venue, organizer, contact route and anything still unconfirmed. Then write a short announcement for campus media and a separate caption for students. Add an audience map: students need timing and access details; campus reporters need verifiable facts and a contact; organizers need an approval process. Do not invent attendance, press coverage or a client. Label the brief as practice work.
| Review question | Evidence to include |
|---|---|
| Is the message accurate? | A fact sheet with source or confirmation for each claim |
| Is the audience clear? | Distinct versions for the people receiving the message |
| Is the judgment sound? | What you would leave out until verified |
| Can results be discussed honestly? | A measurement plan, explicitly separate from actual results |
What to ask in an interview
Ask whether the role is agency or in-house, who approves external statements, which languages matter, what writing tests are used, and whether hours or travel are part of the job. Prepare one answer about how you would correct an inaccurate claim. A convincing portfolio demonstrates judgment and accuracy as well as style.
